McDonald’s is testing a new artificial intelligence-powered drive-thru system called ArchIQ, featuring a voice assistant nicknamed “Archy,” as part of a broader effort to modernize restaurant operations across the United States. The system is currently being piloted at five U.S. locations and has already processed more than one million transactions. According to reports, roughly 90% of orders were completed without requiring human intervention.
Developed in partnership with Google, Archy is designed to take drive-thru orders in multiple languages, including English and Spanish, while also helping restaurant managers identify operational bottlenecks and improve efficiency behind the scenes. The technology is part of the company’s new growth strategy, known as “McDonald’s NEXT.”
The initiative marks McDonald’s return to AI-powered ordering after a previous partnership with IBM was discontinued in 2024 following customer complaints about order inaccuracies and viral examples of mistaken orders. Company leaders believe the new Google-backed system represents a significant improvement over earlier attempts.
While reports indicate that technology upgrades are being installed at restaurants nationwide in anticipation of a broader rollout, McDonald’s has not yet announced an official timeline for deploying Archy across all U.S. locations.
The announcement has sparked debate among customers and industry observers. Supporters argue that AI could speed up service, reduce wait times, and improve order accuracy, while critics have raised concerns about job displacement and the loss of human interaction in customer service.
If the pilot program continues to perform well, Archy could become one of the largest AI-powered ordering systems in the fast-food industry, signaling a major shift in how millions of Americans interact with drive-thru restaurants in the years ahead.
