Supreme Court Allows States to Ban Transgender Athletes From Girls’ Sports Teams

June 30, 2026

The U.S. Supreme Court has allowed states to enforce laws that bar transgender athletes from competing on girls’ and women’s sports teams, declining to block the measures as legal challenges continue.

The decision leaves state laws in place that restrict participation in female school sports based on a student’s sex assigned at birth. Supporters of the laws argue they are intended to preserve fairness and competitive balance in girls’ and women’s athletics.

Opponents, including LGBTQ+ advocacy groups and civil rights organizations, contend that the restrictions discriminate against transgender students and deny them equal opportunities to participate in school sports. They have vowed to continue pursuing legal challenges in lower courts.

The ruling represents another significant development in the national debate over transgender rights, education, and athletic participation. Similar laws have been enacted in a growing number of states, leading to a series of legal battles over how federal anti-discrimination protections apply to transgender athletes.

While the Supreme Court’s action allows the state laws to remain in effect for now, it does not necessarily resolve every legal question surrounding the issue. Additional lawsuits challenging similar policies are expected to continue moving through the federal court system.

The decision is likely to have a broad impact on school athletic programs, students, and state governments as the debate over transgender participation in sports continues across the United States.
