During a recent discussion about representation in entertainment, the award-winning actress emphasized the importance of creating female characters who are flawed, complicated, and unapologetically human rather than forcing them into unrealistic standards of perfection.
For Zendaya, authenticity matters more than likability.
“What’s important is that there are female characters that are flawed,” she explained. “She doesn’t have to be perfect. She doesn’t have to be likable all the time. She doesn’t have to be demure or passive.”
The actress argued that women deserve to see themselves reflected on screen in all their complexity, including the mistakes, struggles, contradictions, and imperfections that come with being human.
“It’s important to have female characters that are messy and reflect what it is to be a human,” Zendaya said.
