President Donald Trump has signed a new series of executive orders aimed at birthright citizenship and the practice commonly referred to as “birth tourism.”
The orders seek to advance the administration’s long-standing efforts to limit automatic U.S. citizenship for certain children born in the United States and to address concerns over foreign nationals traveling to the country primarily to give birth so their children can obtain U.S. citizenship.
The administration argues that the measures are intended to strengthen immigration enforcement, prevent abuse of the nation’s immigration system, and clarify the application of citizenship laws.
Supporters of the executive actions say they will discourage exploitation of existing policies and reinforce border security objectives. Critics, however, contend that any attempt to alter birthright citizenship through executive action is likely to face immediate legal challenges, citing the 14th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and longstanding judicial precedent.
Legal experts expect the orders to be challenged in federal court, where judges will determine whether the administration has the authority to implement the proposed changes without congressional action or a constitutional amendment.
