Gwinnett County Opens Dr. Mary Kay Murphy Middle School to Reduce Overcrowding

August 7, 2026

Gwinnett County Public Schools has officially opened Dr. Mary Kay Murphy Middle School, a new campus designed to help relieve overcrowding as one of Georgia’s fastest-growing school districts continues to expand.

The school is expected to serve approximately 1,100 students, providing additional classroom space and reducing enrollment pressure at nearby McConnell Middle School.

District leaders say the opening reflects Gwinnett County’s ongoing commitment to meeting the needs of its growing student population while maintaining high-quality learning environments.

Named in honor of longtime education advocate Dr. Mary Kay Murphy, the new middle school features modern classrooms, collaborative learning spaces, and updated technology to support student success.

Officials believe the campus will not only improve classroom capacity but also enhance the overall educational experience by creating a more balanced distribution of students across the district.

As Gwinnett County continues to experience rapid residential growth, school leaders say investments in new facilities remain a priority to ensure students have access to safe, innovative, and well-equipped schools
