SpaceX’s Starlink is preparing for a major expansion into the U.S. cellular market, with plans targeting 2027 that could intensify competition with wireless giants T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T.
Starlink is moving beyond its role as a satellite internet provider and positioning itself for a much bigger role in mobile connectivity.
SpaceX executives have indicated that Starlink could begin offering a more comprehensive mobile service by 2027, potentially allowing the company to compete directly for wireless customers rather than simply serving as a satellite-based backup for existing carriers.
The strategy builds on Starlink’s Direct-to-Cell technology, which allows compatible smartphones to connect with Starlink satellites without requiring a traditional satellite phone or specialized hardware. Starlink has already begun commercial Direct-to-Cell services in select markets, initially focusing on messaging, while working toward expanded capabilities such as data and voice.

SpaceX is developing V2 Mobile satellites specifically designed to provide satellite-to-phone connectivity. A filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission indicates that SpaceX expects to begin deploying mobile-focused satellites on Starship in 2027.
SpaceX is also exploring terrestrial infrastructure to complement its satellite network. The combination of satellites and ground-based cellular infrastructure could eventually create a hybrid network capable of serving customers across areas where conventional cellular coverage is limited.
The move could put Starlink in more direct competition with America’s largest wireless providers. T-Mobile has already partnered with Starlink for satellite connectivity, while AT&T, T-Mobile and Verizon have also been pursuing satellite-to-device technology and expanded coverage.
The potential expansion comes as the boundaries between satellite communications and traditional wireless networks continue to disappear. Rather than requiring consumers to carry specialized satellite phones, newer technologies are designed to allow ordinary smartphones to connect directly to satellites.
For now, 2027 is the key year to watch as SpaceX continues developing the technology and infrastructure needed to turn Starlink’s satellite-to-phone ambitions into a larger-scale mobile service.
