NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope has launched on a groundbreaking mission that could transform scientists’ understanding of dark matter, dark energy and worlds beyond our solar system.
The massive space observatory lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida on August 30, beginning a roughly three-month journey to its final observation point about one million miles from Earth.
Scientists have described Roman as a “discovery machine” because of its enormous field of view and ability to survey huge portions of the sky in infrared light. Its wide-angle vision will allow researchers to study cosmic structures and events that are difficult to observe with existing telescopes.
During its planned five-year mission, Roman will investigate some of astronomy’s biggest unanswered questions, including what dark energy is and why the expansion of the universe is accelerating.
The telescope will also map the distribution of dark matter, search for exoplanets and potentially identify thousands of previously unknown worlds, including planets that do not orbit stars.
Roman is designed to complement the work of telescopes such as Hubble and the James Webb Space Telescope. Rather than focusing primarily on individual objects, its strength will be observing vast areas of the universe and building large-scale surveys.
Scientists expect the mission to generate an enormous amount of data, potentially revealing unexpected phenomena along the way.
The launch marks the beginning of a new chapter in space exploration. As Roman reaches its destination and begins its scientific observations, researchers hope its discoveries will challenge existing theories and provide new clues about how the universe formed, evolved and may ultimately change.
