MIAMI, FLORIDA — Five people were killed and at least five others injured after an Amazon Air cargo plane overran a runway while landing at Miami International Airport and crashed into vehicles outside the airport perimeter.
The Boeing 767-300, operating as Amazon Air Flight 7598 and operated by 21 Air, arrived from San Juan, Puerto Rico, shortly before 2 p.m. Sunday. The aircraft traveled roughly 1,300 feet beyond the runway before striking vehicles and coming to a stop.
The National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that all five people who died were inside the two vehicles struck by the aircraft. At least five other people were injured, including three who were initially reported to be in critical condition.
The crash triggered a large emergency response involving more than 60 rescue units and approximately 200 personnel. The aircraft caught fire, and crews also had to address a fuel leak at the scene. The two pilots survived the crash.
Federal investigators have now recovered both the flight data recorder and cockpit voice recorder as they work to determine what caused the runway overrun. The NTSB is examining factors including aircraft performance, crew actions, weather conditions and runway safety features.
Two of Miami International Airport’s four runways remained closed during the investigation, with airport operations experiencing continued disruptions following the crash.
Amazon and 21 Air have expressed condolences to the victims’ families and said they are cooperating with investigators.
The cause of the crash has not yet been determined.
