The cheapest gift in this campaign costs less than a dollar. A shopper who rounds a Walmart.com order up to the next dollar gives the spare change, and Walmart then adds two dollars for every one dollar given, until its match reaches $1 million.

That offer runs from Monday, November 2 through Monday, November 30, and it applies only to purchases on Walmart.com and in the Walmart app. At checkout, shoppers can round up for Operation Homefront, the San Antonio nonprofit that pays urgent bills, stocks holiday tables and houses military and veteran families in transition. This is the fourth consecutive year Walmart has put Operation Homefront in the Round Up slot, and the campaign sits inside A Season to Spark Good, the retailer’s holiday giving program.

The match itself is new money. On October 13, Walmart told customers it was raising its match for Operation Homefront from one to one to two to one. The Round Up program has raised more than $7.9 million for the organization since 2023, and Operation Homefront says Walmart has backed its work since 2006, with cash and in-kind support for programs that include Critical Financial Assistance, the Back-to-School Brigade and Holiday Meals for Military.

“Giving back is one of the greatest holiday traditions, and that’s what A Season to Spark Good is all about,” said Erin Hogue, a senior director at Walmart. “We’re grateful for the service and sacrifices of military and veteran families.” Alan Reyes, Operation Homefront’s president and chief executive officer and a retired Navy rear admiral, said Walmart has helped the organization meet the changing needs of the families it serves. “We are deeply grateful for four years of continued support through Spark Good,” Reyes said.

The need behind the campaign is documented, and it is rising. Operation Homefront reports that requests to its Critical Financial Assistance Program have climbed 48.8 percent this year. More than 28 percent of military families have faced some level of food insecurity, a rate the organization puts at nearly double the rate for U.S. households overall. Its separate 11 Days of Impact drive, which runs November 1 to 12, aims to raise $500,000 for rent, food and utility bills.

Operation Homefront has served military families since 2002. It directs 85 percent of its spending straight to programs and reaches tens of thousands of families a year. Its Critical Financial Assistance program has fulfilled more than 62,000 requests and paid out nearly $50 million. Holiday Meals for Military, a program born in 2010 after a stranger paid a soldier’s $12 grocery bill in a Utica, New York supermarket line, has delivered more than 230,000 holiday meals. The organization also provides transitional housing, permanent homes for veterans, back-to-school supplies and baby showers for new military parents.

Reyes put the month in plain terms in the organization’s Veterans Day appeal. “Veterans Day is an opportunity to honor service, but our responsibility to military and veteran families extends far beyond a single day,” he said. The Round Up match gives that responsibility a deadline: November 30, when the checkout offer and the two-to-one money both end.
