Brandy is officially stepping into television history as the voice of the new “A Different World” theme song for Netflix’s highly anticipated sequel series.
The Grammy-winning singer and actress is putting her own R&B touch on the beloved theme, following in the footsteps of legendary artists Phoebe Snow, Aretha Franklin and Boyz II Men.
The original theme was co-written by series star Dawnn Lewis and creator Bill Cosby, with music composed by Stu Gardner. Over the show’s six-season run, the song became one of television’s most recognizable opening themes, with different artists bringing their own interpretation to it.
Phoebe Snow performed the theme during the first season, Aretha Franklin delivered the iconic version for Seasons 2 through 5, and Boyz II Men took over for the show’s sixth and final season.
Now, Brandy is adding her voice to that legacy. Known for her distinctive R&B style and layered harmonies, she brings a fresh interpretation while preserving the spirit of the classic song.
Netflix’s new sequel series will follow a new generation of students at the fictional Hillman College. The story centers on Deborah Wayne, the daughter of original characters Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, as she begins her college journey.
Several original cast members, including Jasmine Guy, Kadeem Hardison, Cree Summer and Darryl M. Bell, are returning for the sequel, helping connect the new series to the beloved original.
The Netflix sequel is scheduled to premiere with all 10 episodes on September 24, 2026, giving longtime fans another opportunity to return to Hillman while introducing the iconic HBCU setting to a new generation.
With Brandy now carrying the theme song forward, “A Different World” is getting a musical update that honors its past while giving the next generation of Hillman students a sound of their own.
