Christa Gail Pike Survives Two Lethal Injection Doses as Lawyers Seek Emergency Stay

October 1, 2026

Christa Gail Pike remained alive after Tennessee administered two doses of lethal-injection drugs during an attempted execution Wednesday night, prompting her attorneys to file an emergency motion seeking to halt the execution.

According to the emergency court filing, Pike had not lost consciousness and still had a heartbeat after receiving two doses of pentobarbital. Her attorneys said she was also audibly snoring, while media witnesses reported hearing her breathing for more than 40 minutes after the final dose.

Pike, 50, was transported by ambulance to an off-site medical facility following the failed execution attempt, according to the Tennessee Department of Correction. State officials said the established execution protocol was followed and that the protocol does not provide for additional procedures beyond those carried out.

Her lawyers argued that the situation required immediate intervention, alleging that Pike was experiencing unnecessary suffering and that the state had failed to provide appropriate medical care. They also raised concerns in their filing about difficult vein access and the condition of the pentobarbital used in the procedure. Those claims remain allegations by Pike’s legal team.

The execution had already been the subject of an extraordinary legal battle earlier Wednesday. A federal appeals court had temporarily halted the execution while considering claims involving Pike’s history of childhood abuse, but the U.S. Supreme Court later allowed Tennessee to proceed.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 killing of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer, whom prosecutors said Pike and her boyfriend lured to a wooded area in Knoxville. Pike was 18 at the time of the killing.

The attempted execution was also the second time this year Tennessee has been unable to complete a lethal injection. In May, officials abandoned the execution of death-row inmate Tony Carruthers after they were unable to establish intravenous access.

The incident is now prompting additional scrutiny of Tennessee’s execution procedures. Gov. Bill Lee has ordered a comprehensive third-party review of what happened and called off the state’s remaining scheduled executions for 2026, according to local reporting.

Pike’s legal status remains subject to further court proceedings, while officials have not publicly provided detailed information about her medical condition following her transfer to the hospital.
