Cristiano Ronaldo Walks Out of Portugal Camp and Promises to Reveal the Truth

October 1, 2026

Cristiano Ronaldo has abruptly left Portugal’s national team camp, telling supporters that he will eventually reveal the truth about what led to his decision.

The 41-year-old Portugal captain announced his departure on social media after head coach Jorge Jesus held a press conference ahead of the team’s Nations League match against Denmark. Ronaldo said his decision came after Jesus’ comments and a conversation with Portuguese Football F333ederation president Pedro Proença.

“In time, I will tell all the Portuguese the truth about the reasons that motivated me to leave the national team, to which I always devoted myself,” Ronaldo wrote, while wishing Portugal and his teammates good luck.

The sudden exit follows growing tension surrounding Ronaldo’s role under Jesus. Ronaldo was an unused substitute during Portugal’s 2–1 victory over Norway after Jesus initially indicated that he would enter the game. Ronaldo subsequently trained separately from the squad despite not being injured.

Jesus has denied that Ronaldo refused to train or that there was a major confrontation between them. However, the coach acknowledged that Ronaldo was upset after being left on the bench against Norway and emphasized that decisions over the lineup ultimately belong to the manager.

The Portuguese Football Federation confirmed Ronaldo’s departure and said the remaining 24 players would continue preparations for the upcoming Nations League fixtures. The federation did not provide additional details about the circumstances surrounding Ronaldo’s decision.

Ronaldo remains Portugal’s all-time leading scorer and most-capped player, with 146 international goals and 234 appearances. His departure has therefore raised questions about his immediate future with the national team, although he has not announced his retirement from international football.

The timing is particularly significant as Ronaldo continues his pursuit of 1,000 career goals and prepares for what he has previously indicated could be his final World Cup appearance. For now, however, the reasons behind his sudden departure remain known only to Ronaldo and those directly involved.
