President Donald Trump unveiled a new presidential aircraft at Joint Base Andrews on Thursday, introducing a luxury Boeing 747 donated by the government of Qatar that will temporarily serve as part of the Air Force One fleet.
The aircraft, a modified Boeing 747-8, has been repainted in a bold red, white, and blue color scheme and features the words “United States of America” along its fuselage. The updated design marks a departure from the iconic light blue livery that has been used on presidential aircraft since the Kennedy administration.
Trump described the jet as a modern replacement while the government awaits delivery of two delayed next-generation Air Force One aircraft from Boeing, which are not expected to enter service until 2027 and 2028. The Qatari-donated plane is intended to serve as an interim solution during the transition period.
According to the U.S. Air Force, the aircraft has undergone extensive modifications to meet presidential requirements, including upgrades to communications, security, and defense systems. Officials said the plane will complete final commissioning flights before becoming available for official presidential travel.
The acceptance of the aircraft has sparked debate in Washington, with critics raising ethical and constitutional concerns over the United States receiving such a high-value gift from a foreign government. Supporters argue the arrangement provides a practical and cost-effective bridge while the long-delayed Air Force One replacement program remains unfinished.
The newly unveiled aircraft is expected to make its public debut during Fourth of July celebrations later this year.
