The U.S. Supreme Court has declined to hear President Donald Trump’s appeal of a civil jury verdict that found him liable for sexually abusing and defaming writer E. Jean Carroll.
By declining to review the case, the Supreme Court leaves in place the lower court’s judgment, including the $5 million in damages awarded to Carroll.
The verdict stems from a civil trial in which a jury concluded that Trump was liable for sexually abusing Carroll in the 1990s and for defaming her after she publicly accused him of the assault. The jury awarded Carroll compensation for the abuse as well as damages related to the defamatory statements.
Trump has consistently denied Carroll’s allegations and has repeatedly challenged the jury’s findings through the appeals process. However, the Supreme Court’s decision not to take up the case effectively ends his appeal of the $5 million judgment.
The ruling represents another significant legal milestone in the long-running dispute between Trump and Carroll, which has drawn national attention and sparked widespread debate over accountability, defamation law, and sexual assault allegations.
With the Supreme Court declining review, the civil judgment remains in full effect.
