Actress and activist Laverne Cox has revealed new details about her breakup with her former boyfriend, a police officer she described as a “MAGA Republican,” during a recent appearance on The View.
Speaking candidly on the show Monday, Cox shared that the relationship lasted more than three years before she ultimately decided to end it, citing deep political and personal differences that became more apparent over time.
According to Cox, the political divide was initially not the focus of the relationship.
“The political affiliation became obvious but I already had feelings for him and I wanted to see him as a human being beyond that. And then his politics and his unexamined life became clear after the three and a half years and I was like, ‘I love him, but I love myself more,’ and staying in this relationship, I’ll betray myself.”

Her comments highlight the emotional complexity of navigating long-term relationships across deeply opposing political beliefs, especially in today’s polarized climate.
Cox emphasized that while she initially chose to look beyond political labels, her values and sense of self eventually made it difficult to continue the relationship.
