From the hilltop pool at La Résidence Phou Vao, the view runs over Luang Prabang’s temple roofs to the mountains, with the Mekong and the Nam Khan rivers below. As of November 4, that view belongs to Marriott. The 36-suite resort has opened as a Luxury Collection property, Marriott International’s first hotel in Laos and its 800th in Asia Pacific excluding China, according to TravelDailyNews Asia.
Marriott did not build new. La Résidence Phou Vao was already Luang Prabang’s established hillside retreat, set in three acres of tropical gardens above the UNESCO World Heritage town, and the company brought it into The Luxury Collection with renovated interiors and new dining and wellness programs. Marriott describes it as the only hillside retreat within the town’s UNESCO zone. It sits about two kilometres from the old town, close to the Royal Palace Museum, Wat Xieng Thong, and Mount Phou Si.
“Laos represents an exciting new chapter for us,” said Rajeev Menon, Marriott’s president for Asia Pacific excluding China. Through the resort’s “storied heritage and deep connection to Luang Prabang,” he said, the property gives guests the destination itself rather than a version of it.
Rosewood, handwoven textiles, and a 13-metre pool
The 36 suites come in Garden Heritage, Mountain View, and Phou Si Temple categories, finished with rosewood details and handwoven Lao textiles. Bathrooms have terrazzo bathtubs, twin vanities, and rain showers, and selected suites add separate living areas and private terraces.
The main restaurant, La Brasserie de la Résidence, pairs French technique with produce from the surrounding region. On Saturday and Sunday mornings, a local artisan makes Nem Kao, a steamed rice crepe, on the terrace. The Be Epicurean program includes pre-sunset refreshments and private dining at Villa des Arts, a preserved colonial residence about five minutes away.
The Mekong Spa works from Lao tradition: five signature treatments, including a ritual with Hmong indigo compresses and the Sip Sen Lao massage, in an open-air garden pavilion. The hillside infinity pool is 13 metres long. Guests can take the Baci blessing ceremony, sunset cruises on the two rivers, and trips to the Pak Ou Caves and the Kuang Si waterfalls.
For Marriott Bonvoy members, Laos is now on the points map. For Luang Prabang, the test is whether a global loyalty program can fill a 36-suite house without changing what made the house worth joining.
