The drive from downtown Austin takes about 55 minutes, west on Route 71 into the Hill Country, and it ends at a bluff above Lake Travis. On October 15, Canyon Ranch opened its first Texas resort there, on more than 600 acres of former ranchland in Spicewood, with a mile and a half of waterfront and a spa the company bills as the largest in the state.

The timing is not an accident. The International Spa Association’s 2026 study counted 191 million spa visits in the United States in 2025, nearly matching the pre-pandemic record of 192 million, and $23.5 billion in industry revenue. Canyon Ranch Austin is the brand’s largest bet on that demand: 141 rooms, a residential community of 134 home sites under construction beside the resort, and a medical center staffed by physicians, all on land that was once a hunting ranch called the Flying X.

The spa is the argument

The spa runs 40,000 square feet with 37 treatment rooms, whirlpools, therapy tubs, steam rooms and an outdoor area called The Springs, with plunge pools and gardens. The fitness complex, named The Barn, adds 27,000 square feet of movement studios, a yoga deck, a training center and a recovery lab. A separate 12,000-square-foot health center handles sleep, brain health, metabolic health, preventive medicine and human performance.

Treatments are priced like a city medical spa, not a hotel add-on. The Circadian Skin Renewal Facial, 80 minutes, costs $430. The Buccal Facial, an intraoral sculpting technique from Irene Forte that Canyon Ranch says is being offered in the United States for the first time, costs $450. Guests choose from roughly 35 activities a day, and five miles of ranch trails run through the property.

One detail belongs only to this resort. The spa’s soundtrack, a 90-minute loop called The Living Hill, was built by artist Justin Wiggan, who attached sensors to Hill Country plants and limestone and converted their electrical signals into sound. A treatment called Vinyl Revival pairs massage with a full album played on a turntable, with selections made alongside Austin’s Waterloo Records.

A practice built for women

The resort’s most unusual department is the Women’s Wellness Collective, which Canyon Ranch describes as the only dedicated women’s health practice inside a resort anywhere. It is organized around stages of life rather than treatments, offering care, education and testing under one roof. No other Canyon Ranch property has it. The idea connects to a shift already visible in medicine, where longevity programs at hospitals like Northwestern and Weill Cornell are selling structured, physician-led prevention to patients who can pay for it.

Dining is led by Val M. Cantú, the Texas-born chef whose San Francisco restaurant Californios holds two Michelin stars. His restaurant here is called Estella, one of four food and beverage venues on the property.

What the rate covers

Canyon Ranch’s own booking page lists its Stay Your Way package from $1,325 a night. That rate includes meals, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks, the daily activity schedule, and a $200 credit per guest per night toward spa treatments and fee-based activities. Stays of three nights or more add a $300 health and wellness credit. Treatments beyond the credit are charged separately, so the two facials above would consume a night’s credit and then some. The resort takes a two-night deposit, refundable up to 21 days before arrival, and guests must be 14 or older.

CEO Mark Rivers explained the wager in the company’s opening announcement. “People today are seeking something fundamentally different from their travels and getaways,” he said, pointing to health, connection and experiences guests can carry into everyday life. The buildings, designed by Texas firm Lake Flato, sit low in the ranchland, and the address, 600 Moonlight Bend, is a working ranch road. The skyline is an hour behind you. That distance is the product.
