Keisha Lance Bottoms Takes the Debate Stage Alone After Rick Jackson Skips Georgia Governor’s Forum

October 13, 2026

Democratic gubernatorial nominee Keisha Lance Bottoms stood alone on the debate stage Monday night after Republican opponent Rick Jackson declined to attend the Atlanta Press Club’s Loudermilk-Young Governors Debate, leaving an empty lectern beside her during the televised event. The October 12 forum came just weeks before Georgia’s November 3 general election.

The absence marked the first time since 1994 that a major-party candidate for Georgia governor skipped the Atlanta Press Club’s general-election debate series, according to debate organizers. Rather than join the broadcast, Jackson spent the day campaigning across the state alongside Republican Gov. Brian Kemp.

Jackson defended his decision by arguing that voters were more concerned about affordability and rising gas prices than political debates. He said he had spent months meeting Georgians and had not encountered voters asking him to participate in a debate.

Bottoms, the former mayor of Atlanta, criticized Jackson’s absence and questioned his willingness to answer unscripted questions from journalists and voters. She used her time on stage to outline priorities that included expanding Medicaid, fully funding prekindergarten and supporting affordable and workforce housing.

The candidates had appeared together at an earlier town hall-style debate the previous week. That event may be the only televised face-to-face matchup between the two major-party nominees before Election Day, according to Georgia Recorder.

The debate unfolded as Georgia prepared to begin early voting on October 13. With the governor’s race approaching its final stretch, the candidates’ contrasting campaign strategies have become part of the public conversation: Bottoms participated in the press-club forum, while Jackson focused on in-person campaign stops.

The empty lectern became a defining image of Monday’s event, highlighting the disagreement over whether direct voter outreach or unscripted debate appearances offer the better way for candidates to engage the electorate.
