Rio de Janeiro Approves Landmark Law Granting Free DNA Ancestry Tests to Black Residents

The city of  has officially approved Law No. 9,365/2026, a groundbreaking measure that grants Black residents access to free DNA ancestry testing in an effort to strengthen cultural identity, historical awareness, and educational empowerment.


The legislation, authored by Councilor , also establishes educational campaigns, partnerships with universities and research institutions, and the creation of a secure genetic database designed with strict privacy protections.


According to the law, the ancestry testing initiative aims to help Afro-Brazilian residents better understand their ancestral origins and reconnect with cultural histories that were disrupted through slavery and colonialism. Supporters of the measure say the program represents an important step toward historical recognition and racial inclusion in one of the world’s most racially diverse nations.

Officials emphasized that the legislation includes clear protections prohibiting genetic information from being used for discrimination in employment, healthcare, public services, or any other area.
