October 16, 2026

Sherri Shepherd is making Broadway history as she steps into the iconic role of the Genie in Disney’s long-running musical Aladdin. The Emmy Award-winning actress, comedian and television host began her limited engagement on October 16, 2026, becoming the first woman to portray the Genie in any Disney-produced stage production of the musical.

Shepherd’s performances take place at New York City’s New Amsterdam Theatre, where Aladdin has entertained audiences since opening on Broadway in March 2014. Her engagement is scheduled to continue through January 3, 2027, bringing a fresh interpretation to one of the production’s most beloved characters.

Known for her vibrant personality, comedic timing and warmth, Shepherd is bringing her own style to the magical wish-granting character. The role has become a fan favorite for its humor, energetic musical numbers and showstopping performance of “Friend Like Me.”

“Joining Aladdin on Broadway is an absolute dream come true—and an incredible honor,” Shepherd said when the casting was announced. She also expressed hope that audiences would see themselves in her interpretation and leave the theater feeling joyful and inspired to believe in the impossible.

Shepherd is widely recognized for her work as a co-host on The View, her four-season daytime talk show Sherri, and her acting and comedy career. She previously appeared on Broadway as the Evil Stepmother in Rodgers + Hammerstein’s Cinderella, making her return to the stage a significant new chapter in her career.

During Shepherd’s run, Caleb A. Barnett, the production’s current Genie, remains with the company as standby, ensuring continuity in the role. The musical also features a cast led by Rodney Ingram as Aladdin and Sonya Balsara as Jasmine.

Her casting represents a milestone for Disney Theatrical and Broadway, expanding the possibilities for who can bring an iconic character to life onstage. With her distinctive humor and personality, Shepherd is adding a new chapter to the Genie’s theatrical legacy.
