Most safari lodges send guests down a path to the spa. Kuganha put the spa inside the suite and made the suite enormous. The new lodge has opened in South Africa’s Western Cape with 10 private tented suites of at least 320 square metres each, which the property describes as the largest one-bedroom tented safari suites in Africa. Every suite holds a sauna, a steam room, a Himalayan salt halotherapy room, a flotation pod, an ice plunge bath, a jacuzzi plunge pool and double massage beds. There is no spa building to book into. The treatment rooms are where you sleep.

The setting does half the work. Kuganha sits in a 10,000-hectare conservancy in the Cape Tankwa Karoo, about 2.5 hours from Cape Town, on land that has been rewilded over decades. Indigenous vegetation was rehabilitated, and the Big Five were reintroduced to a region where many species had been hunted out over 270 years ago. The reserve is malaria-free. Guests take private game drives, then come home to a waterhole view and a flotation pod.

Built for guests who do not want to be seen

The team behind Kuganha has spent more than 25 years hosting high-net-worth travellers, celebrities, sports stars and diplomats visiting Cape Town, and the lodge reads as a product of that schooling. Privacy is the design brief. Dining is private by default: meals are cooked from organic, locally sourced produce, tailored to each guest’s wellness program, and served either inside the suite or at the main restaurant, which overlooks an infinity pool and the waterhole. On arrival, staff walk each guest through the suite’s equipment in an introductory wellness journey, so the sauna and the ice plunge become part of the day’s rhythm rather than appointments.

The suites also run on independent energy and water systems, a practical matter in the dry Karoo and a quiet selling point for guests who ask how a luxury lodge justifies itself on restored land. Kuganha’s answer is that the restoration is the luxury: land returning to itself, and guests doing the same in very large tents.

Recognized before the first season ends

Robb Report has already named Kuganha one of its 50 Greatest Luxury Hotels on Earth for 2026, a list placement most lodges wait years to earn. Reservations are open, and the lodge publishes no nightly rate in its opening materials, which is its own kind of statement. In the Karoo, at dusk, with elephants at the waterhole and a steam room waiting behind canvas, the number matters less than the silence. Kuganha is selling the silence.

The Social Register’s event directory tracks the season’s galas, benefits, and society evenings. Plan your next evening there.
