Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Kelly Rowland are bringing their longstanding commitment to their hometown of Houston full circle with the opening of the Knowles-Rowland House, a 31-unit permanent supportive housing development designed to help people experiencing chronic homelessness rebuild their lives.
The grand opening took place on October 13, 2026, with Beyoncé, Rowland and Beyoncé’s mother, Tina Knowles, attending the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the newly renovated property in Midtown Houston. Beyoncé’s daughters, Blue Ivy and Rumi Carter, also joined the family for the special occasion.
The $13.96 million development was created by Bread of Life Inc., a Houston-based nonprofit, by transforming a former youth center into permanent housing. The original Knowles-Rowland Center for Youth was established in 1999 with support from the Knowles family and Rowland. It served young people, seniors and people needing overnight shelter before a devastating fire damaged the building in March 2021.
The new three-story building includes 31 individual apartments, with 16 specifically designed to accommodate residents with mobility or sensory impairments. Beyond providing a safe place to live, the development will offer on-site support services through Temenos Community Development Corporation, including case management, mental health counseling, substance-use treatment, life-skills training and nutrition assistance.

During the ceremony, Beyoncé reflected on her personal connection to the location and the church community that helped shape her early life. She expressed gratitude to pastors Rudy and Juanita Rasmus, whose work with Bread of Life has supported vulnerable residents throughout the Houston area.
The project represents more than a new housing development. It continues a community-focused mission that began decades ago, when the site provided a gathering place for young people and families. Its transformation into permanent supportive housing gives the property a renewed purpose while addressing the need for stable homes and ongoing assistance.
The development is supported by public and private funding partners, with all 31 apartments subsidized through a federal housing voucher program. The first residents are expected to begin moving in on November 1, 2026.
For Beyoncé and Rowland, whose friendship and musical journey began in Houston, the Knowles-Rowland House marks a meaningful continuation of their community involvement. The project aims to provide residents not only with housing, but also with the resources and support needed to work toward lasting stability and independence.
