Doha got a new address on Monday, and it arrived with a rooftop pool, a bakery, and a standing invitation for the neighbours. Kimpton Al Rowda Doha opened on November 2 in the Bin Mahmoud district, the first hotel in Qatar for Kimpton Hotels & Restaurants and only the brand’s second in the Middle East. The property holds 283 keys in all: 223 hotel rooms and suites, and 60 serviced residences for guests who measure a stay in months rather than nights.

The mix is the point of the place. Doha fills with executives on long assignments, families relocating, and visitors who come for a tournament or an exhibition and stay for the winter. A conventional hotel serves the first group and loses the rest. Al Rowda was built to hold all of them at once, with Msheireb Downtown and Souq Waqif a short ride away.

Residences with kitchens, and a hotel attached

The 60 residences run from one to three bedrooms, each with an equipped kitchen and a separate living room, and each with the run of the hotel: concierge, housekeeping, the pool deck. The hotel rooms take their colours from the desert, with textured materials and references to Bedouin craft, floor-to-ceiling windows, and balconies on selected rooms. Bathrooms carry both a tub and a separate shower, a small luxury that business hotels usually edit out.

Four restaurants open, a steakhouse to come

Four of the five dining rooms are already serving. August Zang handles pastries, breads and speciality coffee. The Oat House cooks all day with a plant-based menu and a terrace where dogs are welcome. The Surry is an Australian neighbourhood pub transplanted to the Gulf, and Sprezzi serves Italian food beside the rooftop pool, facing West Bay. The fifth room, an American steakhouse called The Capital Grille, opens after renovation work finishes; the hotel has not announced a date, and travellers should not plan around it yet.

General manager Adnan Khan has said the property is meant to serve Doha residents as much as overnight guests, people who come in for coffee, dinner or the pool and never check in at all. The calendar backs him up. Kimpton Kickstart pours complimentary coffee and light bites in the Living Room from 5:30 to 8:30 each morning, and the brand’s Social Hour runs from 5 to 6 p.m. at The Surry.

The rooftop, the spa, and the dogs

The infinity pool sits on the roof with a view across West Bay, next to a 24-hour gym. Below, Sandscapes Spa and Wellness anchors the quieter floors, and the Sandalwood Ballroom gives the hotel a room for weddings and the gala circuit. In-room yoga mats and loaner bicycles come standard.

Pets stay free, with beds and bowls on request and a pet menu on The Oat House terrace. It is a Kimpton signature, and in a city of long-stay guests it reads less like a gimmick than a policy written for people who actually live in hotels. Kimpton’s parent, IHG, has more Gulf addresses coming, with openings planned for Dubai and Jeddah. Doha’s came first, and it opened its doors to the whole neighbourhood.
