Australian tennis star Nick Kyrgios has been provisionally suspended from professional tennis after testing positive for cocaine, adding another setback to a career already affected by injuries and limited competition.
The former Wimbledon finalist tested positive for benzoylecgonine, a metabolite of cocaine, following an in-competition sample collected during an ATP event in Mallorca, Spain.
The International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) confirmed the provisional suspension under the sport’s anti-doping rules. Kyrgios has the right to challenge the finding and present his case as the disciplinary process continues.
Kyrgios has acknowledged the positive test and described the incident as a serious mistake. He apologized to his family, supporters, sponsors and young fans who look up to him.
The suspension comes during a challenging period for the Australian, whose career has been repeatedly interrupted by injuries. Kyrgios reached the Wimbledon final in 2022, marking the biggest Grand Slam run of his career before losing to Novak Djokovic.
