Novak Djokovic has made a remarkable return to Beijing, capturing his record-extending seventh China Open title after an 11-year absence from the tournament.
The 39-year-old Serbian defeated Australia’s Alex de Minaur in the final, winning the opening set 7-6(3) before de Minaur retired early in the second set because of a left groin injury. Djokovic was leading 1-0 in the second set when the Australian was forced to stop.
The victory extended Djokovic’s perfect China Open record to 34-0. He first won the Beijing tournament in 2009 and went on to claim titles in 2010 and from 2012 through 2015, before returning this year for the first time since his 2015 championship.
The title also marked Djokovic’s 102nd ATP singles trophy, moving him within one of Roger Federer’s 103 titles. He remains behind Jimmy Connors’ Open Era record of 109.
Djokovic’s run in Beijing was particularly impressive given the competition. He defeated three Top 10 opponents during the tournament, including Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinals and Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals.

Beyond the trophy, the tournament offered Djokovic a memorable homecoming. Chinese fans packed the stands throughout his run, creating an atmosphere the Serbian described as feeling like home.
The China Open victory was Djokovic’s first title of the 2026 season and extended his extraordinary streak of winning at least one tour-level title in 21 consecutive seasons.
After a difficult season marked by physical and health challenges, Djokovic said the Beijing title meant more to him than simply adding another trophy to his collection. His return to form has once again placed the 24-time Grand Slam champion in the spotlight as he continues his pursuit of more history.
